David used part of the summer break from Westminster on work experience at Stafford Hospital. He carried out shifts cleaning, cooking and acting as a porter, and also helped out on hospital radio.

This was a serious way of looking behind the scenes, understanding the work of the ancillary staff, and getting to talk to staff and patients in an informal manner.
