STAFFORDSHIRE FIRE & RESCUE SERVICE IS IN SAFE HANDS

David Kidney has come away from a meeting with Staffordshire’s Chief Fire Officer reassured that his Service works proactively to reduce fire deaths:

“At my meeting with the Chief Fire Officer Peter Dartford and his Deputy Bob Russell today, I wanted to know about the key performance achievements of Staffordshire Fire & Rescue.

“Ours remains a very proactive Service in identifying households in need of smoke alarms and fitting them directly. Without doubt, this approach has contributed to the considerable reduction in deaths attributable to fires in recent years. However, we have reached something of a plateau now, with no significant falls in numbers of deaths in either of the last two years.

“More still needs to be done to make sure we keep cutting fire deaths and do everything we can to keep people safe. This is why I support the Fire & rescue Service’s campaign for sprinklers to be fitted in more buildings and homes.

“And the fact that the average age of Staffordshire residents who die in house fires is 79 is yet another signal for us to re-design our public services to keep them relevant to the needs of our modern communities.

“I was thrilled to find out the current position regarding Rising Brook’s new fire station. The buildings are due to be completed in July, the new retained firefighters have been recruited and they are undergoing training ready for the opening later this year. Some of the new rooms will be available for community uses and the school next door will benefit from selling the land for the new fire station by getting new sports facilities.”
