FUTURE OF STAFFORD HOSPITAL IN OUR HANDS, MP SAYS

27 May 2009

The Trust that runs Stafford hospital has today published its plans for transforming care. Stafford’s MP David Kidney says everyone who wants Stafford hospital to succeed should get involved:

The Transformation plan goals

“The hospital trust faces many challenges. The transformation programme launched today will only be successful in meeting these challenges if it attracts widespread support. The Trust must accept that today’s document is the basis for dialogue with patients, their relatives, the public and the hospital’s own staff. It cannot be the final word on what needs to be done to turn around the hospital. More about the Hospital

“I have talked to the interim Chief Executive, Eric Morton, today and he confirms that this is a living document which he expects to be changed and refined going forward. I urge all those who want our local hospital to be successful to get involved in this process.

“Most people have something to offer. We want our hospital to be well managed and have enough staff who are well trained. Most of all we want the hospital to be run first and foremost as a service providing care and compassion for all its patients.

“So today I call on everyone to study these plans and offer their constructive suggestions for their improvement. Where you feel the plans are right, say so and give them your support. If you are unsure how you can help, feel free to contact me and I will be glad to help.

“We have reached an important tipping point. From here, our local hospital can go on to be the model of its kind that Professor Alberti says it is capable of being. This can happen if we want it to. But it will take our active support for this ambition to be achieved.”

Key Aspects of the plan

Some of the changes we will be making at Cannock Chase and Stafford Hospitals:

Recruiting nursing staff as recommended by Alberti report

Area 2 – Clinical Staffing

Making sure A&E staff concerns have been met by carrying out a further staff survey

Area 1 – Improving care

Providing information booklets at each patient’s bedside

Area 3 – Involving people

Reviewing the Emergency Care Directorate to ensure rapid, effective delivery of care from patients’ admission through the pathway to discharge

Area 7 – Vision for care

Planning the relocation of Emergency Assessment Unit to be alongside Accident and Emergency

Area 6 – Equipment and Facilities

Providing staff with feedback from investigations and sharing lessons learnt

Area 5 – Control of systems

Reviewing and implementing new complaints process that is "patient friendly"

Area 5 – Control of systems

Implementing a new model of care for medical patients who are admitted. This will provide them with much earlier consultant contact, giving an opportunity for effective pain management, discharge planning and improved communication

Area 7 – Vision for care
