STAFFORD MP IS KEY-NOTE SPEAKER AT NEC CONFERENCE ON SUSTAINABILITY

(Thursday 22 May) Stafford’s Labour MP David Kidney is the key-note speaker at the annual Sustainability Live! national conference at Birmingham NEC. The conference brings together over 3 days businesses and campaigners involved in green industries to do with energy, water and environmental best practice.

David Kidney says that his theme will be the need for everyone to work together to tackle climate change. He plans to speak about the laws to set the UK in the direction of a low-carbon economy (Climate Change and Energy) and the skills that will be required:

“We are giving ourselves tough targets for cutting carbon emissions, recycling more of our waste and conserving natural resources. I am certain that new technologies will be needed to deal with all these challenges. We will, as a country, need to have the right skills to make the most of the opportunities that achieving a low-carbon economy will entail.

“I shall be talking about a national skills strategy and also my own suggestion of a network of SEE Change Centres where skills training can be carried out. As many constituents know, I am putting forward Rodbaston College at Penkridge as a possible venue for the first such Centre.

“This will be a large, informed audience capable of making a huge contribution to helping our country cut carbon emissions and tackle climate change. By our example, we can also influence other countries around the world to join us in trying to reduce greenhouse gases.

“There are many opportunities for environmental industries in the world aiming for a low-carbon, resource efficient future. I look forward to discussing with those in the front line what our country needs to do to get the best out of these opportunities.”

David’s speech is entitled “Statutes and skills: Next steps towards a sustainable future” – you are welcome to a copy of the text if you want it!
