GOVERNMENT FUNDING TO TACKLE ANTI SOCIAL BEHAVIOUR IN STAFFORDSHIRE

 22 November 2009

Stafford’s Labour MP David Kidney is urging Staffordshire’s Councillors to make full use of the new funding to tackle anti-social behaviour announced by Labour’s Communities Secretary John Denham and Housing Minister John Healey on Friday.

Staffordshire will receive £64,000 part of £10 million pot of funding which can be used to tackle anti-social behaviour in local communities.

perception of crime is down

21% of people believed there were high crime levesl in 2002, compared to 17% now.

David Kidney MP says:

“I am delighted that the Labour Government has awarded us this money which I sincerely hope will go towards tackling the isolated pockets of anti social behaviour in towns like Stafford which can and do blight people’s lives.

“In my time in Parliament, the strong national approach to tackling anti social behaviour, allied to the partnership approach at the local level, has made great inroads in bearing down on this unacceptable behaviour by a persistent minority. We know that we cannot drop our guard or relax in the fight against anti social behaviour – which is why we are still funding schemes like the ones announced this week. We want people to feel safe and in control of their own communities.

“We also wants people to know they are not alone. It might be a minority causing harm and misery for the majority but we are clear - this won't be tolerated. We're backing our communities and our neighbourhood policing teams and the partnerships that support them.

Actual crime is down since 1997 crime has fallen by the following amounts.

Overall crime is down 36%
Domestic burglary is down 54%
All vehicle-related thefts down 57%
All household crime down 36%
All BCS violence down 41%
All personal crime down 36%

The neighbourhood policing techniques pioneered in Staffordshire over the last 10 years have done much to contribute to the drop in Anti Social behaviour.

The people who suffer most from anti social behaviour tend to be people who are living in areas where people are not wealthy, and there are a mixture of social problems. It is perhaps not surprising that a Conservative party should fail to understand the problems fully or to recognise what it is that needs to be done.

Conservatives have opposed new powers for local authorities to tackle anti-social behaviour including fly-tipping, abandoned cars, and fixed penalties for litter. And they voted to water down ASBOs, trying to reduce the minimum time they should apply from two years to three months.
