HEALTH DEBATE – GOVERNMENT SAYS NO TO INQUIRY “AT THIS TIME”

Stafford’s Labour MP David Kidney says last night’s debate in the House of Commons about Mid Staffordshire NHS Foundation Trust was high quality. But the Motion calling for an inquiry now was not carried. David Kidney voted for an inquiry.

What is a PPS & Why does David's vote carry extra weight?

David Kidney says there remains a lot to do to help Stafford hospital get better:

“The arguments in favour of an inquiry are strong and those of us who support the call for an inquiry will keep pressing for one. It is right that an inquiry will be costly and will take a long time to report but the unanswered questions about what went wrong raise issues of justice and fairness.
Why do we need an Inquiry?

“In the meantime, however, our local hospital remains in need of our urgent help and support in order to make the improvements that the Healthcare Commission’s report set out. We really must all focus on ensuring that all the necessary work is done in order to give patients, staff and the public confidence that all the hospital’s services are good quality.

“In the debate the Health Minister Ben Bradshaw said that now is not the right time to set up an inquiry because it would distract the hospital Trust from this vital work. My colleague Dr. Tony Wright, the MP for Cannock Chase, quoted Professor Alberti’s report where he says:

“The Trust has the potential to become a model small to medium-sized hospital of the future with care delivered promptly and appropriately both in the community and in the hospital”

Moving forward

“Another Health Minister, Ann Keen MP, spoke of making Stafford hospital a centre of excellence for good nursing standards. These ambitions, which I hold dear and want to see become the reality at our local hospital, will only be fulfilled if all of us agree the plan of action for transforming the Trust’s quality of care – and support it in every practical way. This does mean that there is a heavy responsibility on the Trust’s leadership to share its plan with us, to take into account our views of what should be in it and to create an “open and learning culture” in their organisation so that we can all be involved in working towards this success.”
