GROUPS MEET TO DISCUSS CLIMATE CHANGE BILL WITH LOCAL MP
Stafford’s Labour MP David Kidney is the guest of a number of green groups at a meeting on Saturday to discuss the Government’s Climate Change Bill. The meeting will be held at the County Staff Club on Eastgate Street from 12.30 pm until 2.30 pm on Saturday 23 June.
David Kidney welcomes this discussion on what he says is a proposed law that is the first of its kind in the world:
“We intend to be the first nation to set ourselves a legally binding long-term limit in carbon emissions. As currently drafted, the Climate Change Bill proposes a 60% reduction in carbon emissions by 2050. This is a tough challenge to us all but it is necessary if our planet is to avoid a temperature rise so great that human, animal and plant life will be in serious danger.
“I congratulate the local interest groups for their initiative in arranging this meeting, especially Friends of the Earth. As I am a member of the Joint Committee of both Houses of Parliament presently scrutinising the draft Bill, I am hoping both to give and to receive valuable information about the proposed new law.”
The meeting has been arranged by Paul Roughly of the local Friends of the Earth. Other organisations expected to attend include Staffordshire Wildlife, sustainability Matters and North Staffordshire Green Party.
Other persons or groups with an interest in the issue of climate change are welcome to attend the meeting.
