| The Institute of Advanced Motorists, the road safety charity responsible for the advanced driving course and advanced driving test, is in Parliament today as guests of Stafford’s Labour MP David Kidney. The Institute is promoting a new road safety initiative aimed at employers of people who drive for their work.
Around a third of all road casualties are linked to people driving for work and deaths while driving for work cost the UK an estimated £1.5 billion a year. The IAM is offering employers a programme that starts with an on-line risk assessment of drivers followed up by training that meets their individual needs. The training ranges from e-learning to personal on-road training to improve driving skills.
David Kidney explains why he and other MPs are getting involved:
“People who drive for work are over-represented in the statistics for deaths and serious injuries on our roads. It is a public policy priority that we do more to change this situation – saving lives, reducing human misery and cutting costs to UK industry and UK taxpayers.
“The Institute asked me to host a meeting at which MPs will learn more about the programme and MPs will also have the opportunity to undergo the on-line risk assessment of their own driving. I was pleased to support such an important initiative and I will definitely have a go at the assessment myself.
“The Institute wants MPs to be fully informed about this programme and then hopefully we will be advocates for this kind of training, encouraging employers in our constituencies to have regard to safe driving skills for their workforce. The Institute points out that MPs are also employers, and we are being invited to consider whether our own employees in our constituency offices need a programme like the Institute’s.”
The launch of the programme for MPs will take place today (Wednesday 14 Jan) in the House of Commons Astor Suite, 1, Parliament Street. Immediately after the launch MPs will be able to try out the on-line risk assessment of their own driving skills.
