   CBI conference

The November Conference for the CBI was on the theme of "the Route to Recovery".

The CBI conference is an important twice yearly event to review the performance and needs of business in the country. The November 2009 conference has focused on the challenge of the recession and the road to recovery.

Here is round up of some of the coverage of the Conference.

The CBI acknowledges the deep effects of the recession and has seen that the recession must be a the catalyst for a decade of Business Change.

Gordon Brown,  David Cameron and Nick Clegg all addressed the conference which gives an opportunity to compare their different responses to this.

a new era in business?

The CBI itself said the recession had become the catalyst for a new era in business.

A study by the employers' group identifies four key areas of UK business where new ways of working could develop because of the downturn. these include more flexible workforces, greater collaborations among businesses and wider financing options.

The CBI stufy suggests that Sustainability and ethics should become more integrated into the business model. Firms should seek to improve accountability to attract and retain customers and staff.

Business and opportunities for young people

One of the chief concerns is that there has been a slow down in the creation of opportunities for young people as a result of the recession. Gorgon brown urges businesses to make the provision of opportunities a priority.  "I ask each and every one of you to continue to support and helping to create and grow apprenticeships, internships and new opportunities for young people.

"I would urge you and encourage you to follow up the good work you have done and take on, where you can, new internships as well as apprentices and people with skilled qualifications.

"Our home-grown talent and skills must provide our businesses with a pipeline of skilled workers, the workers they need to compete with the world economy."

He insisted that the government was now funding more apprenticeships than ever before, despite the recession, with a quarter of a million places having been created this year.

Gordon Brown added that advanced apprenticeships would be used to help address skills shortages across the country, particularly in construction and engineering.
