Cancer patients need to know about free prescriptions

Help Macmillan raise awareness of the new prescription charge exemption for cancer patients.

From 1 April 2009, people in England who are undergoing treatment for cancer or its effects will no longer have to pay for their prescriptions.

This change could help around 150,000 cancer patients under 60. This is a very important chande as research by Macmillan Cancer Support showed that nearly half of cancer patients are being forced to cut back on basic needs, such as food or heating, in order to pay for their prescriptions.

To make this exemption scheme work it is crucial that cancer patients know they are entitled to get their prescriptions for free, that the PCT's know too, and that Patients get their exemption certificate.

Any new scheme takes a little time to bed in so if you know of people with cancer please pass on this information to them. To make sure that they ask for their exemption certificates as soon as possible.

If you would like more information about this scheme or the other valuable work that Macmillan Cancer support are doing to support cancer patients please contact:
