Finding out More

We are in the middle of an information revolution. The whole process of govenment is becoming more transparent than it has ever been before, and there are many different ways fo finding out what is going on.

In the Media

BBC parliament is a great starting point. Most people start by seeing the showcase pieces like Prime Minister's question time, but if you dip in and out of the coverage you will discover a whole series of different kinds of debates and discussions taking place.

  • big set piece debates, involving dozens of MP's,
  • Minister's questions
  • Smaller debates led by an individual MP,
  • Westminster Hall debates, which are much quieter, and allow for MPs to develop ideas and arguements in a much more detailed way,
  • Select Committees, which allow for MPs to ask detailed questions to expert witnesses.

If you start getting interested in this you may find that you want to look up more information.

BBC News, Today, NewsnightThe Daily Politics, The World at One and PM also carry useful information.

Locally you may find the Express and Star and Staffordshire Newsletter websites interesting.

In Parliament

David is a particularly active Parliamentarian. You will find the range of questions he raises interesting.

You may find www.theyworkforyou.com  a useful tool. This is a website which gives you access to speeches and questions. You can ask for email alerts if your MP speaks, and you can also get alerts based on Keywords. The website is also useful for carring out research into what has been said on particular topics by particular MPs.

The Hansard Records are also a key source.

You can search Hansard by a number of different methods. Here is a list of David's Speeches in spring- summer 2008.

Here is a list of written questions over the same period.

You can use the Hansard home page to search further back in the archives.

10 Downing Street

carries lots of useful up to the minute information on important questions.

Departmental websites.
